It is with very heavy heart to hear such news. Satoru Iwata, Nintendo CEO dies of cancer at age 55. A letter from Nintendo went out to their staff members, and also released online.
Satoru Iwata‘s Legacy
What set Satoru Iwata apart from other gaming CEO’s was that he himself, was a gamer. And he himself was also a gaming programmer. He wasn’t an outsider brought in to run a company he didn’t know anything about. He was promoted from inside, and his accomplishments speak for themselves.
He was responsible for optimizing Pokemon Gold & Silver so well, that they were able to fit the entire continent of Kanto from the previous first generation games. Iwata also worked on The Legend of Zelda, Mario, and the Animal Crossing series of games. He saved Earthbound by writing a new scripting language.
It’s important that companies we love as fans are run by people equally in love with their company. I will leave you with a few quotes that I love from Iwata:
On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.
As any game developer knows, the three basic food groups are Fritos, Cheetos, and Doritos.
Games exist for one reason: Fun. Fun for everyone.
Rest in peace Satoru Iwata. You will inspire a new generation.
